1967 was not only Canada’s centennial year, it was also the year that local residents of the Shag Harbor region of Nova Scotia reported a very clear sighting of what appeared to be a UFO lighting up their October Skies. The usual skeptics came up with the suggestion that what was seen in the clear Autumn sky was some kind of aircraft, while those in favor of the UFO theory rushed to state that of the thought the flashing row of orange-yellow lights they spotted in the sky one October night must have been a plane, even though they’d never seen anything like it. Eye witnesses stated that they saw a series of really bright orange lights that lit up the sky for a few moments and then dimmed. This cycle went on for quite a long time, and the switched to a different and even more spectacular sequence. The sequence was one light, two lights, three lights and then four, which would reverse and then begin again. This light show, although completely silent, went on for almost ten minutes.
After that, things seemed to take a change for the worst. The number of eye witnesses increased as the unidentified craft suddenly let o a loud whistling sound, similar to a rocket, then a loud whooshing sound and lastly a loud explosion. Some bit not all of the witnesses reported seeing something crash into the harbor. These somewhat confused witnesses reported that incident to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who set out to identify the mysterious craft.
Initially, no one gave a second thought that this might be a UFA that had slipped beneath the waves of the not to deep harbor, and the first three Mounties on the scene were also highly surprised to see strong yellow/amber lights blinking slightly below the surface of the water. Before they could form a rescue plan, eye witnesses reported that the lights appear to fade gradually, and became very weak. After a while they disappeared all together, and some yellow colored bubbles began to appear on the surface of the water. There is a lot of confusion at this time as to whether the craft sunk beneath the waves, or flew of into outer space at such a velocity that it left this mysterious trail of bubbles in its wake.
In the meantime someone in authority had contacted the State Rescue Coordination Center (SRCC) to verify that any aircraft had been reported missing in the last few hours, wit the answer being negative. Fishing boats were dispatched to try and affect some kind of rescue, but the volunteers on board could find no sign of life. The only signs that an incident had occurred was a kind of yellow bubbly foam that had built up on the surface of the water.
This mysterious incident has been the subject of investigations and theories for more than forty years now. Many of the eye witnesses claimed that the ship appeared to be sending out some kind of distress signal till it went down. Many ask why all further attempts to salvage the mysterious space craft were totally cloaked in secrecy. Members of the public, including the many fishing boats that worked the area were warned about getting too close to the “crash scene”
In recent years, the incident at Shag Harbor has been celebrated as some kind of national event for the locals. The Government of Ottawa has begun to donate a modest amount of money to allow the locals and visitors to the area to celebrate the possible arrival of visitors from another planet each year on the 4th of October. Whilst the sum of money earmarked is modest, it cam either be regarded as a gesture or an attempt to make light of something that was deadly serious. It looks like we will never know.
